Valheim Server Hosting

A practical hosting guide covering session choice, server settings, crossplay, network ports, and world backups.

01

Choose the right hosting method

Use the client’s Start Server option for a hosted session that can end when the host exits. Use a dedicated server when the world should remain available while the server process and its internet connection continue running.

Valheim 1.0 supports games for 1–10 players.

02

Configuration and continuity checks

Which dedicated-server settings must be configured?
The documented launch command sets SteamAppId to 892970 and starts valheim_server.exe with -nographics and -batchmode. Configure the server name, port 2456, world filename, password, and public visibility through the -name, -port, -world, -password, and -public arguments.
How should I handle crossplay, ports, and backups?
Add -crossplay when the server must connect players across Valheim’s supported platforms; the supplied example launch scripts enable it by default. Allow incoming UDP traffic on game port 2456 and Steam query port 2457. Back up the world’s .db and .fwl files together as one package.
